Dogs are great companions. They give unconditional love, loyalty, and friendship to their owners. In return, the owners are expected to provide the things their dogs need. Things like food and water, shelter, safety, regular veterinary care, and exercise are some things the owner is expected to provide. Dogs can be a major part of your life, but they do require a lot of your time, patience, and care.
Basic Dog Care
ID tags
You will need an ID tag with your dog’s name, your name, your address, and telephone number on it. This will help greatly if your dog is loose in a neighborhood. With the ID tag with all your information on it, your dog has a better chance of being safely returned to you.

Bathing
Bathing is another thing you will need to do about once a month. However, giving your dog an exceedingly number of baths in a short period will dry out your dog’s skin. This may cause skin infections. The best option to choose would be to bathe your dog about once a month. If you think your dog is dirty between that period of time, wipe your dog with a damp cloth. If it is just its paws do the same.

Grooming
Grooming your dog is something that should be done regularly. Daily brushing or combing is all most short haired dogs need. For long haired dogs you may have to take to the groomers. It is a good idea to start grooming early in your dogs life so it becomes routine for them.

Vet Check-Ups and Health Checks
It is advisable to give your dog a monthly health check. This is a simple task that does not require a vet visit. These health checks consist of checking the pads of their feet for injuries, checking the inside of their mouth for sores or cuts, making sure their ears are dry and kept clean, and keeping their teeth clean. A trip to the vet every 2-3 months is in your best interest.

Your Dog’s Diet
Your dog’s diet is also very important. You want your dog to have a nutritionally balanced diet with fresh water always available. Water is good for dogs just as it is to you. So, make sure your dog ALWAYS has access to water. When deciding on the diet for your dog it is best to ask your vet what food will be best for your dog.

Exercise
To keep your dog fit and healthy, you will need to exercise your dog daily. By keeping your dog occupied it is less likely your dog will develop behavior problems. You may walk your dog twice a day or just simply play with them. Just remember that no dog is the same and the exercise requirements depend on the breed of your dog and the age of the dog.

Containing Your Dog
Some people prefer to keep their dogs free, some prefer to kennel their dogs, and others prefer to tie their dogs up. It is advisable that you don’t tie your dog up. This leads to boredom and may result in the dog having a bad temper. Try to keep your dog free roaming as much as possible. If there are areas in your house that you do not want your dog entering, baby gates will stop your dog. They are easy to assemble and can easily be taken down when not in use.

Health
If you do not want to use your dog for breeding, get your dog spayed or neutered. This will help contain the animal population and keep fewer dogs out of shelters. Doing this may let your dog have a longer life, be healthier, and have less behavioral problems. Also, you should vaccinate your dog for rabies and other diseases. It is necessary to ensure the health of your dog and everything your dog comes in contact with.

You need to provide shelter for your dog. This includes a dog house and a fenced yard for active dogs that need room to run. However, most dogs crave companionship with their owners and don’t like to be left alone for long periods. So, try to spend as much time with your dog as possible. And try to only make your dog sleep in its dog house at night.
