Math
Our math curriculum comes from Saxon Math which incorporates daily problem solving through the use of "hands-on" manipulatives.
We do "side A" of Class Practice together. "Side B" is the homework side. It is important to read the directions to your child and check over their work before returning it back to school.
There are several types of addition and subtraction facts that are practiced.
Doubles - 5+5, 3+3, 9+9
Count - on - 5+1, 7+2, 9+3
Count- backs - 8-1, 10 - 2, 7-3
Doubles plus one more - 5+6, 3+4, 8+9 (the children are taught to look for the smaller number, double it, then add one more)
Zero facts - 9+0, 2+0, 6-0, 1-0
Subtraction doubles - 9-9, 2-2, 0-0
The fact practice pages are not timed in first grade, however, I highly discourage students from using their fingers.
We take a weekly test on skills practiced that week and in previous weeks, as well as, a fact test.
